May 4 Update Regarding Additional Positive COVID-19 Cases

Testing for COVID-19 in residents began on March 24. Following our first positive case on April 29,our medical staff increased the surveillance and testing of residents who had been within close proximity to the positive case. As of this weekend, we have a total of 2 additionalcases of residents testing positive. The two residents havebeen transferred to a local hospital.

We also have one confirmed positive staff member who works with the residents on the first and second floors. The staff member has not been on our campus since May 1. Per NYSDOH guidelines, the staff member has begun the self-quarantine process. They will not return to work until cleared by their health care provider.

Our staff continues to follow the guidelines set forth by our medical experts and infection control nurse in conjunction with the Onondaga County Health Department and the New York State Department of Health.

We would like to remind you of the measures we have taken (and continue to take) in our facility since this crisis began, to protect our residents and staff:

  • Continued No Visitors Policy
  • Restricted First Floor of Jewish Home
Since the first positive case, the first floor of the nursing home has been secured so that only the clinical staff who work on that floor are permitted entrance, along with other essential staff members. All meals are distributed by the first-floor clinical staff. Staff from the first floor ARE NOT floating to any other floors within the facility.
  • Increased, Ongoing Disinfectant and Cleaning
  • Increased Surveillance of Residents and Staff on the 1st & 2nd Floor
We have increased clinical surveillance of residents on the 1st & 2nd floors for signs and symptoms including twice-daily temperatures. We will continue testing any residents who exhibit signs and symptoms.
  • Increased Preventative Measures for Staff Safety
In addition to first-floor staff being limited to their assigned floor, there is a dedicated break room for staff. This will help prevent any potential exposure to staff who work in other locations throughout the facility. First-floor staff has been provided additional personal protective equipment including non-disposable face shields.
  • Facility-wide Infection Control Measures
Throughout our facility, we continue our infection control practices to lessen the risk of exposure or transfer of COVID-19 including no visitors, daily temps of staff before the start of a shift, social distancing, and limited, small group activities. We have installed additional hand sanitizer stations throughout the facility.
  • Ongoing Staff Education
We are providing ongoing staff education related to COVID-19 including signs and symptoms associated with the virus. We continue in-services related to infection control measures such as cough etiquette, hand washing, contact precautions, and proper use of PPE.
  • Encouraging Staff Testing
We cannot mandate that staff be tested but they are required to have their temperatures taken prior to the start of their shift. If they are exhibiting any signs and symptoms of the virus, they will not be permitted to enter the facility. We continue to encourage staff to access free testing at Walmart’s Bridge Street location.

At this time Menorah Park has no other confirmed cases of COVID-19 on our campus.

Menorah Park’s clinical staff will continue to notify you of any changes in the status of your loved one(s). For non-clinical updates, families are encouraged to continue working with their Syracuse Jewish Family Service contact to connect with loved ones via phone and video calls. If you havenotreceived an assignment please contactEllen Somers, Assistant Director, 315.446.9111, ext. 225.
