Staff Testing
By Friday, June 5, we will have completed six rounds of mandatory employee testing for all of our staff who work in our skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. Staff members who tested positive and have been on self-quarantine at home are not permitted to return to work until they test negative. We continue to encourage staff in our independent living facility to get tested at locations like the Walmart Bridge Street location.

Reopening of Hair Salons
Following strict infection control procedures which include PPE, the following salons are scheduled for reopening:

  • Jewish Home: TBD. We are still waiting for clarification from the local health department.
  • The Oaks: Salon reopensThursday, June 4.

UPDATE: No Outside Visits for Jewish Home Residents
We realize how difficult this forced separation has been for our residents and their families. After working towards finalizing a plan to begin visits next week, we were strongly advised by the County Health Department not to facilitate any outside visits between residents and families at this time. While we await guidance from the State and County Health Departments on the next steps, we ask that you remain patient. We encourage families to continue working with their Syracuse Jewish Family Service contacts to schedule phone and video calls with their loved ones. If you have not received an assignment please contact Ellen Somers, Assistant Director, 315.446.9111, ext. 225 or at [email protected].

FAQs: Staffing
What are we doing to ensure the safety of our staff?
We continue to have extensive safety precautions in place including monitoring all staff and residents in our facility for signs and symptoms and testing as necessary. We are currently in our second week of onsite staff testing: full-time staff twice a week and part-time staff weekly. All staff is being supplied with personal protective equipment. Our nurse managers are in regular contact with COVID-positive staff on self-isolation. This helps keep the team informed about their staffs’ health while offering a personal connection to staff dealing with the challenges of being on isolation.

What are we doing to address staff shortages due to staff testing positive for COVID?
Even before the COVID-19 crisis began, we were committed to hiring qualified, dedicated staff. Currently, we are still retaining the majority of our staff. Like other long-term care facilities, we anticipated future staffing challenges by aggressively advertising for talented, qualified employees and we are interviewing and onboarding regularly. We also utilize shift differentials and overtime where appropriate.

What other ways are we supporting our staff?
We are making every effort to support our dedicated staff as they continue to put themselves on the frontlines to care for our residents. We have instituted pay differentials and bonuses. We have provided meals and we recently established an on-campus community food pantry to provide food, toiletries, and other amenities to staff working extended shifts.

How can families get updates on their loved ones?
If there is a change in the health status of a resident, our clinical staff will notify the family. For non-clinical questions and/or requests, we continue to encourage our families to work with their Syracuse Jewish Family Service contact to connect with loved ones via phone and video calls. If you have not received an assignment please contact Ellen Somers, Assistant Director, 315.446.9111, ext. 225 or at [email protected].
